Indulging My Inner Minimalist

2016 is just about to wrap up. Without fail, after Christmas every year I am overcome with the need to organize, clean and simplify. I think this is my inner minimalist violently reacting to the waste I witness every year with discarded wrapping paper, Christmas cards and the excess of “things” that are bought and given.

Another man’s treasure is another man’s trash.

I’ve seen many gifts given that have sat and collected dust. It’s such a shame that our society continues to produce trash and, in turn, trashes our spaces. Well, that’s a post for another time.

Today, I want to focus on what I can control. Our home. Our behaviors. Our impact. And I want to indulge in my need to simplify. It makes me feel better. It makes me feel lighter and feels like somewhat of a tribute to not encouraging the production of more “stuff.”

So far, I have reduced my closet by about 25% of what it was. I have seen and read the 40 hanger challenge, but that is too lofty of a goal right out of the gate. I have a small closet that I share with my husband, so I don’t have much to start with, but I am determined.

My next feat will be cleaning my office. I work from home and my files and piles are really self-inflicted. I don’t have to have any paper if I don’t want, but I am old-school. I come from a time where taking notes during a lecture, call or conversation was the way, and it’s really my best way to remember things. Always has been. As a result, I have piles of files and paper on my clients. This will be my goal today.

I will make a goal each week to support my need to simplify.

I’ll report back soon!
